Written in partnership with Dr Clarence De BELILOVSKY, dermatologist member of the Mustela circle of experts. Extremely dry skin = food allergies... It's not automatic! If extremely dry skin manifests itself particularly when the dry skin is in contact with allergens, there is not necessarily a relationship since the food is ingested. However, it can happen. Certain foods can have irritating contact with the skin. When swallowing them, contact with the mouth or the contour of the mouth - especially when your baby is learning to eat on his own! - could tickle the immune system and therefore a flare-up. The real question now is whether extremely dry skin has a direct relationship to a specific food intolerance or allergy. Find out if being allergic to carrots, for example, will trigger a flare-up if your baby eats them. Opinions differ... What we could say at the moment1: - If your baby has extremely dry skin, it's because he has an atopic condition! That is to say, his immune system responds excessively in the presence of allergens. This could just as easily be expressed by conjunctivitis, bad hay fever, asthma which are other possible manifestations in addition to extremely dry skin or food allergy. Depending on the sensitivity of their atopic condition, the same person may be subject to a single manifestation or several without this being linked. So your child may be allergic to carrots but not have extremely dry skin when they enjoy them. The reaction to this food will manifest itself differently (regurgitation, diarrhea, etc.) - When extremely dry skin is particularly severe, it can however be directly linked to a food allergy. SKIN REACTION, SKIN REDNESS: BE CAREFUL WITH THE MOST ALLERGENIC FOODS Any doubts? Go to your doctor who will advise you to consult a dermatologist and/or an allergist depending on the symptoms. Once the results are in hand, they will then decide whether it is necessary to implement what is called an “elimination diet” to avoid certain foods. Those which are most often concerned: - peanuts - milk - nuts and seeds - wheat - egg white - fish, crustaceans and molluscs - chocolate More importantly, they will tell you, depending on the age of your baby and their dietary diversification, how to replace them to maintain an equivalent nutritional value... and continue to offer small gourmet menus to your child! 1Source: http://www.allergynet.com/dermatite-allergy-aliment
